NEW YORK — UAE Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Kaabi yesterday held a series of meetings here with a number of his counterparts participating in the UN General Assembly high-level meeting on international migration and development.
Al Kaabi met with Egyptian Minister for Manpower and Migration Aysha Abdul Hadi, Filipino Labour Minister Artoro Brion and Pakistani Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
He briefed his counterparts on efforts being exerted by the UAE to regulate entry and work of foreign workforce and protection of their rights. During the talks, the UAE minister proposed conclusion of memoranda of understanding with their countries based on introduction of an e-system for entry and recruitment of workforce.
Under the new system, Al Kaabi explained that all labour contract transactions would be processed by labour ministries or offices in the supplying countries.
“These
transactions will be taken away from private recruitment agencies which have
been found involved in human trafficking and cheating labourers by offering
them fake contracts that didn’t guarantee their rights,” he added. “A
directory will be issued to educate labourers coming to the UAE to increase
their awareness about the UAE and its laws,” he added.
